Created by Steve Thompson's family and friends in his memory, the tournament celebrates Steve's life, generosity, and commitment to Saint Mary while raising funds to support school programs and capital improvement projects. The Steve Thompson Memorial Golf Tournament is an annual fundraiser that celebrates faith, family, friendship, and a tradition of giving that has supported St. Mary's Catholic School for generations.
A Tradition of Giving
Established in 2007 by Steve Thompson's family and friends, the Steve Thompson Memorial Golf Tournament honors Steve's life while continuing his family's longstanding commitment to St. Mary's Parish and School.
For more than a century, the Thompson family has been woven into the fabric of Saint Mary. Steve's maternal grandfather, an architect, helped design the current St. Mary's Church. His mother was a lifelong parishioner and St. Mary's graduate who, together with her husband, Hays Thompson, raised ten children on Catherine Street. Each attended St. Mary's Catholic School before continuing to McGill Institute or Bishop Toolen High School.
Steve and his wife, Michelle, proudly carried on that tradition by raising their three sons as St. Mary's students.
Known for his kindness, generosity, and love for family and friends, Steve left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Following his passing in 2003, his family and friends established the tournament to celebrate his life and continue supporting the school and parish that meant so much to him.
Today, Steve's siblings, children, classmates, and lifelong friends remain actively involved, ensuring that his legacy of faith, generosity, and service continues for future generations.
More Than a Golf Tournament
From its very beginning, the tournament has been about more than a day on the golf course.
Each year, tournament organizers identified a meaningful capital improvement project that would have a lasting impact on Saint Mary Catholic School. Rather than raising funds for a general purpose, the school community rallied behind a specific project—allowing supporters to see the direct results of their generosity.
Because of that support, the tournament has helped fund:
- Thompson Field
- Lafayette Street parking and entrance improvements
- Carpool traffic flow improvements
- School bathroom renovations
- Numerous additional campus capital improvement projects
Over nearly two decades, the Steve Thompson Memorial Golf Tournament has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars, leaving a visible and lasting impact throughout St. Mary's campus and benefiting generations of students.
